Who Can Remove Asbestos in NSW?
The type and quantity of asbestos determine what license is required.
Class A – Friable Asbestos
Friable a can easily be crumbled or reduced to powder when dry, creating a greater risk of airborne fibres. Any amount of friable asbestos must be removed by a licensed Class A Asbestos Removalist.
Class B – Non-Friable Asbestos
Non-friable, or bonded asbestos includes materials such as:
Asbestos cement sheeting
Corrugated asbestos cement roofing
Asbestos-containing vinyl floor tiles
Compressed asbestos cement sheets
Internal wall and ceiling linings
Eaves, soffits and gable linings
Flat asbestos cement sheets
A Class B asbestos removal licence is required when removing more than 10 m2 of non-friable asbestos.
For smaller amounts (<10 m2), an asbestos removal licence may not always be required, but the relevant WHS requirements still apply. SafeWork NSW recommends using a licensed asbestos removalist wherever possible.
